14-1 RACK

14-1 or More commonly called Straight Pool was the game of choice in the early days of The Hustlers and Road Men. Fast Eddie (Paul Newman) is the young hopeful on the way to challenging past master of the green baize, Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason ) for his world title. Pool-hall America: a merciless macho world where success demands absolute ruthlessness and coming in second means a personal hell of inadequacy

A Synopsis of The Hustler

Minnesota Fats "aka" Rudolf Wanderone Jr.
Born Rudolf Wanderone Jr. in 19?? (no one knows his actual age, but people theorize that he's between 82 and 95), was almost as good an entertainer as he was a pool player. No one could touch him in either category. Wanderone also was nicknamed "Fatty," "triple smart," "dean of the green," "the sultan of stroke" and the "bank shot bandit."
Minnesota Fats died in Tennessee 1996 from congestive heart failure.
His epitaph read: "Beat everybody living on Earth. Now, St. Peter, rack 'em up."

Mosconni`s High Run Quote
"On March 19, in Springfield, Ohio, I ran 526 balls, a record thatstill stands. I was playing a two-hundred-point match against an amateur by the name of Earl Bruney in the East High Billiard Club. He
made three balls off the break, then I ran two hundred and just kept going. The run took two hours and ten minutes, which means that over the span I averaged four balls a minute. I finally missed a difficult
cut shot, but by that time I was weary; it was almost a relief to have
it come to an end. There were about three hundred people in the
audience, and one of them was an attorney who prepared an affidavit
attesting to the validity of my claim to a new record. A few days
later, the BCA gave its stamp of approval."

Some things heard in the movie "The Hustler"
Stroke on the
highlighted words to hear the .wav file

Wav File What was said by the Actors
Houseman: says wav No bar, no pinball machines, no bowling alleys, just pool, nothing else
Fast Eddie says .wav  I'm the best you ever seen Fats. I'm the best there is.  Even if you beat me, Im still the best.
Fats says .wav Will ya cut that sunshine out ?
Fast Eddie says wav  I'm shootin' pool, Fats. When I miss, you can shoot.
Fats says wav  Fast Eddie lets play some pool
Fats: Do you like to gamble Eddie? Gamble money on a pool game ?
Fats: "Sausage" Rack M Up !
Bert Gordon: You got talent.
Eddie Felson: I got talent? So what beat me?
Bert Gordon: You've the best excuse in the world for losing; no trouble losing when you got a good excuse. Winning. That can be heavy on your back too, like a monkey. You'll drop that load too when you got an excuse. All you gotta do is learn to feel sorry for yourself. One of the best indoor sports, feeling sorry for yourself. A sport enjoyed by all, especially the born losers.
Fast Eddie: I don't rattle, kid. Just for that I'll beat you flat!
Fast Eddie: Get on me Bert, I can't lose.  I'm still the best.
Bert Gordon: Stay with this kid; he's a LOSER.
Fast Eddie about his pool stick: It's got nerves in it. It's a piece of wood, got nerves in it.
Fast Eddie:"How can I lose? Twelve ball. How can I lose? Because you were right. It's not enough to have talent. You gotta have character, too. Four ball. Yeah, I sure got character now. I picked it up in a hotel room in Louisville."

And let`s not forget about Walter Tevis
Walter Tevis

WALTER TEVIS is best remembered as the author of two popular novels about pool, The Hustler and The Color of Money. Both books were made into enormously successful movies starring Paul Newman. The Hustler documented pool culture in the United States in the late 1950s and The Color of Money followed up on the same theme 25 years later. Both movies were directly responsible for igniting strong uptrends in pocket billiards during the years immediately following their releases.
